That's pretty much the entire town right there. Everything else is just house and maybe a gas station on one the corners. Small town USA is one Main Street with 5 or 6 shops and 2 or 3 restaurants.

Only visit NY and LA. Nowhere else is safe in America.

I live in a small town in South Dakota, 800-ish people. It's mostly corn fields, 98-99% white, 3 black people & a handful of Mexicans, some prolly illegal, geuss I don't care, not harming anyone. It's peaceful here, nothing bad ever happens. Lots of jobs from all the family farms, keeps lots of people employed. Little slice of heaven.

Quite, peaceful, no real big issues aside from keeping jobs in the town. Like some anons here say, you start trouble there really isn't protecting you. There is a reason that every time we get some nogs or spics in our town and they act up, they go missing. Other than that its all about jobs and keeping them, sure you won't be doing your $120,000/per year power managing job but everything is proportional. In my town like many others if you make $32,000 or above then you are well above the $25,000 median and are rich by town standards.

This is what I find scary about small town America. I've sort of got that impression, maybe from too much TV, but life seems much cheaper in your country.

As long as business keeps coming in you have it good, not rich but not poor. I knew a lot of people who inherited their businesses from the former bosses who retired or died usually small retailers. Then there are the countless trades jobs you can get or start and yes... lots of auto repair shops (where I got my first job at). Then there is truck driving and energy jobs. You can go government by either working for the school, police, fire, city and then there are the real permanent jobs like the DMV and Post Office.

Just don't act up, really it's that simple. We don't huge multi precinct police departments like the cities do, my town has 10 police officers so yes, you get to take the law into your own hands like thieves and violent criminals. All other crime is for the department. There are is a neighboring town we have that the Police force is merged with the Fire department and has 5 people, basically cops who also put out fires and do EMT duty.
As for cost of living, yes everything is cheaper BUT this is proportional. If a house costs $100,000 then yes it is high priced for us and will take just as long to pay off if you are making $21,000 at the local restaurant. Things like groceries are a little more expensive and so is gas. You need to be competent at fixing your car and fixing your own things. Everybody depends on everybody else, if one small business fails then it creates a domino effect and will take out others if not managed properly.
