Blacks areas are typical shithole Africa, cities are typical Western developed world with some nice mostly white towns in the colder southwest. It's been like that throughout pretty much all of its history, it's similar to the South in the US. They've found a balance since that's the way it's always been.

South Africa is basically like New York City in the 70s on a country wide level. Just because it's dangerous and you have to live cautiously doesn't mean it has "collapsed" into some Ethiopian famine. Have Mexico and Brazil "collapsed" even though they're probably even more dangerous. Humans adapt to their circumstances, and South African whites are used to it, it's their culture and history to tolerate living amongst Africans. The peacefulness in whites areas during Apartheid were actually an anomaly in South African history and was artificially enforced which is why it fell. Whites in SA have always had to defend themselves against blacks to maintain their territory

Yet despite all this, there are many developed areas in cities and towns in South Africa which are an integral part of the global economy and middle and upper classes still live with a very high standard of living. The country is also huge and sparsely populated, so you could live most of your life hardly interacting blacks if you wanted to.

It cannot be compared to the situation in Zimbabwe, which was a small colonial remnant with a few farms and some whites who saw themselves as foreigners and who left when the reality of Africa started to hit them (most of them moving to South Africa anyway).

Yes and no. In black areas the schools are pretty much 100% black. English government schools in the suburbs are a mixed bag. Afrikaans government schools are mostly white or coloured. The government is trying their utmost at present to get rid of Afrikaans schools. Private education can vary from lily white to fairly mixed. However, then it’s mostly upper class blacks, so it’s not a big issue.

In rural areas, school are of course all black. In cities and suburbs, some schools are mixed and some are mostly white (specifically the Afrikaner language schools, but they also have Coloureds in the Cape provinces who also speak Afrikaans, but they are lower class, so they will attend crappier Afrikaans schools whereas whites will attend better Afrikaans schools. Some blacks also enroll in Afrikaans school and grow up learning to speak Afrikaans simply because of the better education they will receive than going to a rural black school, though English language school of course still have first choice. In Durban with a high Indian population, these schools will be mostly white and Indian). There are also expensive upper class boarding schools for the upper classes which are English speaking and mostly white, but since alot of blacks are now in the upper class in SA they also attend these schools. There are also Hindu and Muslim specific religious schools and international schools for expats that some wealthier South Africans (white, black and indian) may send their kids to where they follow American or European curriculums, and probably now increasingly Chinese ones as well (pretoriachineseschool.co.za/)
