In 1997 Hong Kong made up a third of China's GDP, so China couldn't realistically go up against HK, cause any damage to the city would cause huge damage for the rest of the Chinese economy. Add on to that the fact it wouldn't be an easy fight so HK would be able to spend half as much as China for war and would likely get support from the recently evacuated UK, and infringing on HK's independance would not have been smart.
Now Hong Kong only makes up 5% of China's GDP so China can shit on Hong Kong all it likes and not have to worry about ruining their economy, nor do they have to worry about war since the UK is long gone and moved on to different things (mainly cuckery), and China dwarfs Hong Kong economically.
The Hong Kongese are screwed without an outside help and I'm worried China's gonna use Tibet tactics to replace Hong Kong's anti-Beijing population with loyal Beijing citizens.
