Manafort came on board because the Cruz campaign was threatening to flip enough delegates at the convention to steal the nomination. Manafort was the only Republican with experience at controlling a convention (or at least the RNC said so), so Trump agreed to take him on. He also agreed to choose Pence out of their acceptable VP list rather than Flynn, and take on some other GOPe plants like Priebus.
None of that has anything to do with whether Trump knew why they wanted Manafort inserted into the campaign.
This was always my understanding, which on the flip side makes it obvious he head no knowledge of his prior dealings with foreigners and only choose him for his past experience.

If you read the Mueller report, it's clear they threw everything but the kitchen sink at Trump and his campaign associates. The report goes out of its way to put Trump in the worst possible light. One thing about Trump, as a businessman and not a politician, is that he hires people for their ability rather than because they agree with him. If he hires you to bulldoze land for a golf course, he doesn't give a shit what you think about golf. So he takes on a guy like Manafort because he has a particular set of skills, and figures as long as he does the job Trump tells him to do, he doesn't care what Manafort's been up to in his spare time. Politics is different from business, so that strategy hasn't always worked perfectly for him, but it's his way.

Then a few weeks later Mueller, had Manafort arrested on October 30, or 10/30. Manafort knew it was coming, he was probably the one who set the date for his own arrest.
I think the stuff in the freezer in Manafort's storage locker, the stuff his lawyers were so emphatically trying to suppress from the court record, was my frozen semen.
