Auschwitz was the fourth Operation Reinhardt camp - but it was also a huge labour camp, so it had hospitals etc. But eventhen the hospitals int eh camps were often simply isolation blocks, for inmates to die or survive, keeping disese under control, with little or no real medical care.

But exhaust fumes are cheap to make, and they work... so it was not necessarily that it was the best, just that it did work.
