It's all a matter of severity. I very rarely visualize things but can do it if I try really hard. It will first come as a wire frame image. Then i can basically bucket drop colors into it if needed, then i can try to imagine a somewhat coherent image. That is not a better or worse thing than being able to pull up a photorealistic image on command. It is the difference between a hard drive storing a novel in txt and a photo in jpg. The first option would be terrible for a painter and the latter useless for a jeopardy contestant. Neither is abnormal until you hit the far extremes, someone unable to do one or the other adequately, which is a symptom of autism. What I know is that visual people are great in remembering visual details even if esposed to those just once. But I'm referring to autistic people, so this might be different for others.
I think my mind works in a topological way, it's like I'm aware of paths between informations, of any kind. I can be in a never seen town and "know" how to reach places, if I am in a room I can tell you where the main building entrance is, or where is a cardinal point, or the train station, or another town. Try to visualize something like your favorite tree or a, famous painting and you will realize how much is image versus data.
