I did it a few times a couple months each. You get used to it and settle into a routine. Every inch of America is owned by somebody and most of it is fenced off. You can't just pull over and sleep in someone's farm like they do in the movies. There is however a ton of BLM land and state and national parks. If you plan it out a little it's pretty cheap and allows you to see all sorts of things.
It's a little late in the season. Right now would be perfect because it's not blistering hot but hasn't gotten cold yet either. In a couple months you won't want to ride in most of the country and will end up a San Diego bum like the rest of them.

I would recommend it if you're in your 20s ,you want to see what's left of America and especially if you have friends or family spaced out a bit. Take the excuse to couch surf and feel like Steve McQueen for awhile while getting your thoughts straight.
