Wrong. The heat shield on milspec rails or cuts in an aluminum rail are to circulate heat and dissipate it from the rail. I have an aluminum rail with poly flats down the sides and can run k's of rounds with no issue. I'm not against gloves but I run all of my rifles much better with bare hands.

Ill give flats a try on my SBR but that bench gun is kind of a varmint gun. It does get really hot though.
Ive just always worn gloves. I cut the index tips off of mechanix gloves and then burn the loose strings back. Good to go.

Yeah that's not a bad way to go and like I said up above, gloves aren't a bad idea especially if you're trekking or if it's winter, obviously. Check out the guard on the FAL. It's DSA's "winter guard" cut large for gloves specifically. I'm pretty sure they make something like that for the AR too where it's cut lower.
