In a normal revolution people spontaneously rise up against the established and entrenched authority usual as a result of great necessity. In americas case however, it was far more similar to two already established states being in conflict. In america what was desired, the society and autonomy the colonists want, was already had for many years due to english neglect, and so their motivation for conflict was not to overthrow a present system, but to maintain one. It was not to change society, but to keep it from being changed.

This goes to ilustrate how humans are less willing to lose something than they are to try and gain something. Revolutions occuring due to dissatisfaction with the status quo require great suffering on the peoples part before anything is done, whereas conflict to preserve a desired status quo can be started not out of pure necessity but through persuasion.
