IDK... I must say I have run into more than a few who fit the "stereotype" to a T... I think Public Education has a lot to do with this. Thankfully I was educated in Private (parochial) Schools up through the 9th grade, when I was forced to move to public education, and quit school. They were teaching 9th graders things I had already learned in the 4th and 5th grade. I took my GED at 16, and moved on to Post-secondary education....

I've known a lot of dumb Americans, but I do a lot internationally, and I have to say, it seems like 10 years ago, Europeans my age really were more sophisticated than Americans. Now the Europeans I meet seem strikingly unintelligent, much dumber than Americans. What the fuck happened to (white) Europeans over the past decade?

Americans are just ignorant of a lot that goes outside of their country.

I mean let’s say you’re some average white American from Minnesota earning a modest average income. It takes you hours and hours of travel to get anywhere significantly different from your state.

It’s no wonder that a person who grows up in such a secluded (culturally) environment is a bit thick when it comes to the world outside of their bubble.

Europeans are amused by this but I think your average European is equally ignorant of countries in Africa for example because no one ever cares to travel there.

It's not really proximity that makes them not care, it's relevance. Also our education system really doesn't teach shit, that's not a joke. I've learned more history from playing EU4.

Americans on average tend not to know much about the outside world and believe fables about their own country and others. When questioned on this they tend to be proud of their own ignorance which doesn't really help either. Does this mean that they're all stupid? Absolutely not, but these kinds of interactions don't exactly help with the perception.

The reverse side is, Americans are always amazed to learn that foreigners know what's happening in our country. We have a tough time getting interested in foreign elections for example, but everyone has an opinion about Trump 2020.

Americanisation of media causes a lot of that, we get bombarded with news from your country so it's difficult to avoid knowing things. However, at least in this country, it's a rather biased view usually from what you would consider a democrat perspective.

I think it's the fact that Americans don't know much about the world beside what happens in America, isolated by two oceans, large continent with everything spread apart. Maybe less refined and 'cultured' would be more accurate, but not necessarily stupid. Americans have a certain practicality about them and a disdain for protocol and bureaucracy, with some exceptions. I think all of these traits are less prominent now than before. Now the mutt nigger spic goblins? Those are stupid.
