People who bitch about democracy are saying they dislike a broad base of people having a say in decision making, but then think the probability of good decisions will be increased if you decrease the sample size. Democracies basically "normalize" a country's decisions. A normal curve is also known as a bell curve, and democracies are supposed to represent the "normal" people ("demos" in Greek basically means the common people) in government decisions. In a democratic republic, like the United States, the power is transferred to representatives for defined terms. Something like the Brexit vote was a direct democracy vote.
In a binary choice situation with a large sample size (population), results will naturally regress toward 50/50 results. Even only a 52% win such as Leave for Brexit is supposed to be civically taught as a majority win that's enough of a share of the statistical normal position that it should be considered respectable.
The problem with modern democracy is that the "civil servants" in government roles don't trust the decisions of the demos because a demos have been stupid enough to let in mass numbers of third world idiots making the population pool get a progressively lower IQ.
