Young men need to work hard, earn wages, then lease somebody else land to farm/graze, then earn more money and more equipment, then buy your own plot of land and build a house, and so with the next generation that grows up. Exactly. Truth is, I was out there. I tried all that shit. I got my PhD in chemistry. All that glitters isn't gold, and I moved back home to run the farm. I've seen what society has become, and I want no part of it. I want a family, and children. My wife and I want our parents to grow old with us, and watch their grandchildren grow. That means more to me than any amount of money and "success" in the entire world.

The point of kicking them out is to force them to use and exercise the life skills you have (hopefully) taught them as they grew up. Coddling them away from the supposedly big and scary world does them no favours.

Yeah, but what if, and hear me out, what if instead of multigenerational households, boomers kick their kids out at 20, so they can pay rent on an apartment until their 30, then buy a house on a 30 year mortgage, ending up dishing out an additional 50% on top of the house's value in interest payments? Also, the Boomer parents can reverse mortgage their own house, which they just finished paying off, in order to finance their retirement. Once they're too old to care for themselves, they can get dropped off at a retirement facility which charges $2000/month, thus draining away whatever remains of their wealth in the last year's of their lonely lives, leaving their progeny. Why can't we just do that?

I think the OP might have misinterpreted somewhat there. I mean I'm sure people do that, but my wife and I are building a new house on the family farm. So there's my grandparents house, my parents house, and now my wife and I. It's a 60 acre farm, not including land we lease. Most houses only need to sit on one acre. The rest is shared land, barns, garages, etc. It's a good middle ground on all of it.
You need space to be alone, but at the same time, I wouldn't trade for the world having them within a quick walking distance. I've learned so much from my grandfather since I moved back already.

The idea in a traditionalist home is that the children from a young age are brought up to have responsibility and even help maintain the house by doing chores, mowing the lawn, etc. because it will be their future home. When they are old enough to work they become responsible adults and have earned their right to take over the house. They weren't raised to be lazy pieces of shit who merely take advantage of their parents' accomplishments and take over their property once their dead.
