The middle east was depopulated by the Mongol invasions in the 1200's and then the Turks under Tamerlane in the 1400's. The silk road died out in the 1600's when a handful of western European countries established direct trade routes to India and the far East. This put their economies in a death spiral and they were too late to get into colonialism like the Europeans were doing. This also made them weak to be torn apart by Europeans in the 1700's and onwards.
