We are currently in the midst of a global slowdown that could lead to widespread recessions/depression and chaos. Just this week the FED had to bailout the repo markets with $100 billion dollars to prevent a 2008 credit crisis here in the US, another 75 billion will be injected daily for the next 2 months. In this context, nations going broke, losing control of interest rates, war with Iran and whomever else jumps into the fray will be a convenient excuse for the central banks. Trade wars -> currency wars -> depression -> WW3. Not necessarily in that order, but pretty close.

The Iranians simply have too many juicy targets for retaliation: all the extremely vulnerable Gulf client states of the US, the US bases in the region, and if the mutts are dumb enough to maneuver them within range, carriers. They probably could defeat IRan and collapse the Iranian society, but it would be a rather phyric victory as the entire ME would be left in tatters, petrodollar would be done for, and the global economy would grind to a halt.
People have countered that the US might want this to happen so China is hurt worse (lacking domestic oil supplies like US does), but this ignores the very close Sinno-Russia axis. If the mutts really wanted to play it zero sum, I doubt the Russians would just allow them to win.
