The experiment described in the paper sampled randomly generated numbers produced through a specialized scenario involving quantum phenomena. The researchers said they determined that their quantum computer beat regular computers at the task, which involved calculating the output of certain specialized circuits.
"While our processor takes about 200 seconds to sample one instance of the quantum circuit 1 million times, a state-of-the-art supercomputer would require approximately 10,000 years to perform the equivalent task," the researchers said.
Google's quantum computer, dubbed "Sycamore," contained 53-qubits, or "quantum bits," a measure of the machine's potential power. The team scaled back from a 72-qubit device, dubbed "Bristlecone," it had previously designed.
The researchers estimate that performing the same experiment on a Google Cloud server would take 50 trillion hours—too long to be feasible. On the quantum processor, it took only 30 seconds, they said.
"Quantum processors based on superconducting qubits can now perform computations...beyond the reach of the fastest classical supercomputers available today," the researchers write. "To our knowledge, this experiment marks the first computation that can only be performed on a quantum processor."
So what, if anything, does this mean for AI? It feels like we are rushing towards the cliff laughing like fools with technology now. I'm not a Luddite, but Jesus.

There are assuredly some problems the quantum computers we design will be faster at solving however will those problems be generally useful is still yet to be determined. It's interesting they didn't also state their quantum computer is shit at doing calculations any normal machine can do trivially.

Let me try a shitty car analogy: This is like our current technology are boats, and we've just invented a car. It's a shitty car, but it can move on land and a boat can't do that. It does not mean we'll stop using boats. In some tasks, a car will be faster, and in other tasks a boat will be faster. This shitty analogy is to help you understand that quantum computers are not taking over and will not replace anything. They are a supplemental computing resource doing a specific task better than preexisting computers.
You would more likely end up with a quantum processor you plug into your computer - like a GPU - in 30 years, than replacing your computer with a quantum processor entirely.

They don't have the processing power nor bandwidth to do that.
This sort of 3D mapping using weak EM signals is computationally expensive, so your phone can't do it without looking like it's a bitcoin miner. Sending the raw data over someone's connection is also unfeasible because it's too much data.
Eventually, it will probably happen. Right now the technology isn't there to make it a reality.
