As far as I know, Peterson isn't a psychiatrist? He's just a psychologist, he's not a doctor. Depending on the country, psychologists can't prescribe medicine. They can request that a pharmacist gives over-the-counter medication, which pretty much ensures that you get it (otherwise the pharmacist can just outright reject it if they want).

Socialized healthcare is only as good as the country it exists in. I've spent more time in hospitals, twice seriously. I've never had to pay for anything outright and get bankrupted, and I've never had to wait in a queue for anything serious. In terms of both cost to effectiveness ratio, and lives saved/successful treatment: Australian public healthcare is better than the United States. The only group of people that benefit outright from privatized medicine are the 0.1% of people that can see the best doctors, and the pharmaceutical/insurance companies.

A well funded public option kept in check by a private option, and both complementing and keeping each other honest, is objectively the best system to supplying healthcare to 95% of people.
While this statement can be used in most elements of politics relating to state control, I don't think it's inherent to Socialized medicine in general. Australia's public healthcare system is run automatically by unelected bureaucrats. While some of them probably get off on rejecting people; the same can also be said of private companies that hold monopolies (like in the United States, where they're all a disgrace). This is more an argument against human nature and power in general, both of which exist within the marketplace and privatized medicine as well.

Health care systems vary widely in Europe. Here it's essentially a system of private insurance, except everyone is required by law to have insurance, the insurance can't turn you down, and if you're poor you get a subsidy to pay for it.

Nobody is saying that the medicine in America is superior to just about everywhere else...at the very top end of society. That's what happens when your country is the scientific and medical-science hegemon of the world. They have all the experimental treatments. The problem is like 99.9% of the population isn't in the top 0.1%. You have a few percentage points of people near the top end that don't get anything better regardless of model (Just private or Public+Private), they get the second-tier doctors and have enough money to cover costs. Everyone else, who actually has to deal with the consequences of not having money and living in an economic model that turns medicine into parasitism; clearly benefit from socialized medicine in many ways, even if they're not using it and are instead using the private option.
