It’s interesting to note that in Hungary the total number of divorces pretty much stabilized between 20/30k a year since the 70s. However the total number of marriages plummeted from around 90/100k per year to 45/50k.
Under the communist rule being married meant you had and advantage in getting government housing, and it was the only way for most people to leave their family homes.
As a result in 1990 (at the end of the commie rule) 90% of Hungarian women were married by the age of 24, today you reach the same level at around the age of 34/35.

We were unofficially a Catholic theocracy until about 30/40 years ago. The church controlled marriage and family life. You couldn't get married without a priest. Marriages to non-Catholics were strongly discouraged, and if in rare circumstances such a marriage was permitted it was not allowed to be a public ceremony (usually it was performed in the side wing of a closed church) and the parents had to undertake to raise the children as Catholics. Until last year, you needed to baptise your child into the Catholic church in order to be admitted to 95% of primary schools in the country.

Children born out of wedlock were usually seized by the church and sold to rich foreigners whilst the mothers were enslaved for the rest of their lives. If the mothers tried to escape from slavery, the police hunted them down and returned them to church officials. The stolen children and enslaved mothers were forbidden from contacting each other and the church obstructed any and all efforts to establish contact.

Contraception was totally illegal until the 1970's. It was then made legal on prescription to married persons only, subject to the approval of the parish priest. Criminal prosecutions for smuggling contraceptives occurred as late as the 1990's, when Richard Branson was famously prosecuted for selling condoms in a Virgin Megastore in Dublin. It was only made freely available in the late 1990's.

Abortion was almost totally banned until very recently.

Divorce was illegal until 1996. Until a few months ago, there was a four year period of separation mandated by the Irish constitution before a divorce could be granted. The typical cost of the divorce process alone ran into the tens of thousands of euro, before the man loses half his shit to the woman.

Ireland is now a typical European country when it comes to social attitudes but the hangover from all the above is still there when it comes to marriage and children. There were serious consequences to having children out of wedlock - ostracism, child trafficking, slavery etc. With no contraception or abortion available, people didn't take risks.

There were also serious consequences of getting married too early. With no divorce, you were stuck with that person for your entire life - no matter how feckless, ungrateful or abusive they were.

The end result is a culture in which people delay marriage until they're absolutely sure they want to spend the rest of their lives with another person and rear children with them. Most people I know got married in their mid to late thirties. You were considered a bit of a dope if you got married in your twenties.

In Ireland we had restrictions where a couple had to be living apart for around 10 years before they could get legally divorced so most people just don't bother and drink instead.
It got reduced to a few years not so long ago so divorces will probably be a little more common.
