The most common reason that interesting topic threads become kill is from LAZY ASS OPs. They post a topic and then go make a ham sandwich to see if it takes off a half hour later.
I run 300+ post threads on this site all the time because I curate the thread and respond to as many people as possible until the topic conversation takes off around the 100+ mark.
I'm not even convinced that most of the new threads are "slide threads" anymore. I think its just lazy ass fucks that throw shit at the wall to see if it sticks. "Oh hey look my thread is still up, ha ha!"
