Why are 60s jets so aesthetic? There's something about the design with the old school wing style that just looks better than swept wings or flying wing designs.

>2018
>fighting in Afghanistan
>get CAS from turboprop planes
>watch them strafe the enemy like it's 1944

that's pretty neato

with 50 cals, too.

what if i rerolled a sortie while airborne from DCA to stopping a TIC in-progress?

Thats pure boner material

Are iron dumb bombs still being used by first world air forces?

Damnit you beat me to it, commies can go fuck themselves but you gotta appreciate the IL2

I have always had a boner for jet trainers turned into ground attack aircraft for some reason.

I am so skeptical and interested at the same time. Is this a recent trend? Please tell me more.

user, a flight hour for an F-16 is roughly 30k IIRC. it's cheaper to drop 10k JDAMs if it means you have to sortie fewer aircraft.
The problem is that JDAMs are more limited in availability than flight hours, so it's likely that in a high-end war you won't have enough smart bombs to go round and you'll have to resort to dumb bombs in large numbers.

Intruders will always have a very special place in my heart, they get so little attention

I have the opposite view.
The EF-111 should have been the one they kept, instead we have this piece of shit that did everything worse than the EF-111.

but one is navy and the other is air force, how is that related?

>his jet cant do botth

Attached: 1280px-Australian_F-18A_Hornet_launches_Sparrow_missile_c1990.jpg (1280x992, 278K)

Blatantly overseen. The intruder was among the very best planes the Navy had in its entire history. A pure attack machine. 24/7/365 all weather. Alone. At 300 feet. And with up to double the bomb load a B17 took to Berlin.

Intruders bombed targets you wouldn't even see when you were standing right in the middle of them.

And it was a crime and a shame the Navy dropped her like a pice of shit. She still had so much more life and room for upgrades.

Clinton was doing budget cuts.
They decided that the Airforce and Navy both don't need EW aircraft.
They requested a 10 year cost analysis from the AF and Navy.
AF calculated fuel, oil, maintenance, engine changes, future engine upgrades, future avionics upgrades, etc.
Navy just calculated fuel burn, I shit you not.
So they scrapped the EF-111 because it was more expensive to operate.

And in the long term, it actually costed more for the A-6, because they rebuilt the A-6 into the EA-6B.

Damn shame.

“BALLAD OF THE FIGHTER DUDES” (Sung to the tune of Ballad of the Green Berets)

Fighting snots from Miramar They’ve seen some sams, but from afar.
They stay feet wet while we attack, “You guys stay here ... we’ll be right back.”

Hungry for a combat kill. Then one day, an imbicile
Provided us with this reminder: Can’t sink a boat with a sidewinder.

Reporting SAMS on Bubiyan (When for two weeks they had been gone),
Loner claimed he dodged more fire Than all A-6 crews. What a liar!

They fly CAPS clear of ground fire. At night they cannot catch a wire.
Flat at the ramp, over the top, “No DLC”! When will they stop?

Silver Stars for every clown Who shoots a helpless helo down.
Intruders fly through walls of lead
and get two strike/flight points instead.

One final word to fighter boys: We are tired of all your noise. Fifty-three K waiver my ass! Suck it up! Trap your first pass!

--YFSDO Denby Starling VA-145 “Tumor Board” Desert Storm 1991

Plus, in a high intensity war there is a greater density of targets to hit with dumb weapons. There is also the issue that dealing with the political consequences of the inevitable collateral deaths from dumb munitions (and especially cluster munitions) in asymmetric warfare is expensive in its own way.

sooo...the F-35 spews money out of it's lift fan. This is a good thing.

As well as the 4 on the fuse, Tornado can carry two more Brimstone launchers on the wings, although I don't think it was ever cleared for more than 6 launchers.

Typhoon can currently only fit launchers to inboard and outboard wing.

but that was a fighter...

I just realized the Chinese haven't really updated their ground attack aircraft. They're still using the Fantan.

Attached: Q5_parked.png (2007x1131, 1.99M)

In name only. It had no air to air ability. It probably should have been named the A-117.

The Chinese missed out on the great race to produce Attack Aircraft which was the late 70s and 80s which was based on supporting ground battles in a Cold-War-Gone-Hot scenario.

As it stands, the Chinese fobbed off CAS for the time being to fighter-trainers like the Hongdu L-15.

Producing armed trainers seems to be all the rage in Asia's great arms manufacturers nowadays.

you can sink a boat with a sidewinder now. 9X has air-to-ground capability.

I'm sure someone already posted best strike aircraft, but here she is, anyway.

Attached: bombs away.jpg (1720x1189, 745K)

The Navy vitally needed the A-6 as it could carry a shit-ton of ordnance, I think 3X a hornet, over 2x the range. So they fucked around to protect their program with the EA-6B, then cancelled it anyway. A lot of Navy acquisitions and divestment between 1990-2010 make absolutely zero fucking sense.

One of the best aircraft that never were.

Fuck every bit of BPO'ing that thing after EOF.

the probelm was that it wasnt that useful, as other planes can, and did fill the role just as well.
there was no reason for it to exist then, and there isnt now.

Lahad Datu was done by the Sultan of Sulu's private army. The Sultan holds no office in the Philippines but wields tremendous local power in Sulu as a folk figurehead of Sulu Nationalism. Sabah used to be part of the Sultanate you see

Marawi was done by the Maute Group, which is a splinter of Abu Sayyaf and is into LARPing as Asian ISIS.

The Navy gave their whole A6 fleet brand new composite wings in the early 90s and even got brand new whole planes after the gulf war and still threw them all out in 96. If that ain't just plain dumb I don't know what is.

>best
>not all-weather capable

That don't look like an Intruder, son. But I guess you AF guys are just a little dumb

The OG CAS aircraft

Not really when it's yours that are being spewed

ah, the fighter ramp at Nellis.

Depending on the version either a tv camera or a laser designator.

Oh, I won't deny that the A-6 is probably the best in actuality, but I just prefer the Thud's aesthetic. Big and yet sleek.
