Mississippi as a naval waterway

Is there any kind of documents stating that we planned to sail the Nimitz or other warships up the Mississippi? I remember a mission on one of my flight sims where I was in a F-35 landing on a European carrier in the miss’ and it was some kind of NATO training exercise simulation?

Could we launch attacks from the miss’? Could we launch air craft from carriers or would we have to use wasp carriers? Would the miss be a killer naval guerrilla warfare area?

>what is draft
that being said, most coast guard boats could do it

I remember in Stanley Karnow's book about the Vietnam War, he tells the story of how he was having lunch with a colonel right next to the Mekong River in 1962 when he saw the USS Lexington going up the river, with the deck covered in helicopters

>holy shit, what was that
>I didn't see anything, what are you talking about

I’m not really knowledgeable on naval things why is a draft needed or not needed?

I would be at full mast if I saw that. Will read that book for sure

"draft" refers to the distance from the keel of a ship to the waterline

>he tells the story of how he was having lunch with a colonel right next to the Mekong River in 1962 when he saw the USS Lexington going up the river, with the deck covered in helicopters
total bullshit, Lexington never served in Vietnam

Fake news I guess

Thank you man sorry bein stoopid

Why is a keel needed or not needed?

um, if it was black ops as the book seemed to insinuate, why the fuck would it be on its wikipedia page? it must not have been declassified yet.

Because it's the bit on the bottom of the ship's hull that stops the sailors falling out and drowning.

>black ops mission featuring an entire aircraft carrier with how many man sworn to secrecy
>Thinking any of the from that era would stay silent about sailing a FUCKING CV UPRIVER
>Thinking the locals would somehow just stay quiet about that.

Are you fucking stupid?

They made submarines in lake Michigan then hauled them up out of the lake and drug them over to the Mississippi where they sent them down nearly the whole length of that river.

>Could we launch attacks from the miss’?

and attack what

>Would the miss be a killer naval guerrilla warfare area?

what

why don't you just google the word

>black ops
>enormous fucking aircraft carrier
>filled with retarded sailors

user i

Lexinton, nope. They still had bunch of WWII-era escort carriers in service during Vietnam war and those were used to ferry aircraft into theater and out of theater. Vietcong actually managed to sink one of those on her moorings in Saigon, USNS Card, formerly USS Card. 5 US sailors died and ship was refloated 17 days later.

Lightly loaded escort carrier probably could go up to Can Tho to unload.

Wisconsin is not in Michigan.
Those submarines were smaller than a carrier, and were pontooned to float higher.

A deep keel keeps a boat steady while in the ocean and stops it tipping over in rough seas, however, having a deep keel also means you can only sail in water that is deep enough, which generally precludes rivers.

>black ops carrier

Here I am imagining the entire crew with really long paddles trying to quietly go up river

I'm amazed that someone this stupid is still capable of posting on Jow Forums.

This is wat you moron, are you thinking we’ll be nice to the enemy?

Are you under the impression it's called lake Wisconsin?

Thats the retarded route. Easier to go through the canals around upstate New York.

different user, of the Great Lakes the closest to Mississippi is Lake Superior, I guess the other user figured the subs were transported from Superior to Mississippi overland, after quick googling my own guess is they were simply floated from Lake Michigan down the Illinois river to Mississippi

...but seriously, every major river (plus a number of lakes-) in Mid-West shares name with a state? That's bound to cause a lot of confusion if all parties aren't familiar with this fact:

"Yeah I lost my favorite rifle in a boating accident"
"That sucks, where?"
"Ohio, Kentucky"
"...What?"
"Ohio, Kentucky"
"...Ohio or Kentucky, which one is it?"
"FFS, for the third time, Ohio river in Kentucky!"

When my dad was on the nimitz he said there was a rumor going around the enlisted that they were going to sail to kathmandu. He tried telling them that the nimitz is fast, but not that fast.

Hello I am from that area, literally no one has ever made that mistake here what so ever, because it's geography, no one is going to think you were boating in Ohio you dipshit.

>sailing a supercarrier to Nepal's capital
sounds like a fantastic idea if you wish to piss off both India and China at the same time.

>only people from Mid-West would ever talk about rivers in Mid-West, and only with people from Mid-West

>People not from the midwest regularly come to the midwest to boat in fucking Ohio and anyone with half a brain would ever make that assumption for a state with barely 100 lakes you can actually boat in.

I guess if they're dumb as you they'd talk about rivers they haven't been in places they've never been like they know how it is being by them.

>thinking people could be dumb proves you are dumb yourself
OK

I feel like an enemy could completely saturate the whole river with aircraft. Am i wrong?

Id think they'd be impressed, kathmandu isn't exactly easily accessed by car, let alone by huge ship

its called a non disclosure agreement, and yes and entire carrier crew could be forced to sign one. they can also lock the doors so the only people who are able to look outside and actually see where the carrier is are officers on the bridge. and what makes you think locals didnt see it and don't talk about it? it was viet fucking nam. we don't hear their stories. i personally believe it based on the book. stranger things have happened
