If it's not for going innawoods and just EDC, you really might want to consider a folder. There's really nothing you'd do with an EDC that would require being a fixed blade.
For old school and nearly indestructable, a buck 110.
For multitool, a Victorinox or Leatherman (victorinox's are nicer for pocket carry, leatherman's won't be all the comfortable without a belt pouch)
Benchmade is a good company, just about anything you get from them will serve you well but fold seem to really love griptilians.
Kershaw is a decent company with plenty of sub-$30 folders, just look for whatever you like.

That's kinda harder to answer because it is really hard to fuck up a fixed blade knife, there's literally hundreds of good knives out there.
Glock or mora for inexpensive but good knives.
Cold steel, despite the memes, has some decent stuff, I've heard nothing but praise for their trail master if you're looking for a more bowie kind of knife, buck 119 or ka-bar also fill this niche.
ESEE and fallkniven are good for more modern style, no frills knives
Ontario Knives are pretty decent, wide selection too.
If you want to go full meme mode and want a hatchetknife get a kukri, just make sure you're not buying a tourist knife and remember that real kukri's do not have hand guards or finger grooves, just one ring in the the middle of the handle (pic related).
