spot welds on stainless or galvanized steel is going to look gloopy like that. it is the ions going crazy -- typically plasma cutters tend to do this. because of intense residual heat on expanding/vibrating particles. in a nutshell it'll hold.

I have some experience with home-made guns. Around 2000 I had myself a home made 12 gauge single shot (picture the one from Fallout NV but shittyer), it worked fine and I hunted coons with the thing. I'd post pics but it kinda exploded mid 2005 and I don't have any pics saved.
To any gun-smiths, check your shit regularly. I got lucky and only got off with a few cuts and ringing ears.
