I don't know about the 36th but a lot of the SS units recruited from occupied countries ended up in Berlin at the end and were pretty much wiped out fighting to the last man. Going home meant prison or a noose so they had nothing to lose. It's part of the reason Berlin was such a bloodbath for the Soviets.

Outside of that, they existed as literal bullet sponges, soldiers that existed to do nothing but force enemy crewserved teams to expend preciously fleeting ammunition in the twilight of the war. There were times when they suffered literal >300% casualties against ghetto militias built of starving Poles, Gypsies and Jews, and routed every time they encountered resistance, let alone organized resistance. When they were pressed into front line action, they were even more atrocious.

The waffen SS was a mixed bunch of units, some were high quality, some less so, many were foreign "volunteer" units, so on. Furthermore, many units started out as battalion size formations that grew to be divisions or corps over the war. The quality and ethnic/social origin of the men and officers varied unit by unit and over time. You can't just make a sweeping statement like that, it makes you look retarded.

It was not botched at all, the Luftwaffe deliberately targeted hospitals during the invasion, it got so bad that they had to move them into unmarked buildings for protection.
