If you can whittle and securely affix the head to a relatively straight stick you have 95% of the effectiveness of the original. You can even carve the part that goes into the axe head with the separate axe head itself.

I assume you mean in terms of the barrel? I would say anywhere from 10-30in depeding on what ranges you expect to be firing it from although at longer distances you should be firing round ball or slugs out of A 4 winds can consist of a 3in 1in piece and a 6in 3/4in piece if you really want to conceal it but good luck hitting anyhting that isn't down a hallway with anything other than bird shot If you wan't to be legal than you need a 18in barrel with a 10in 1in
