inmho, spears are intuitive to use, don't require much manipulation (just hold your ground with the pointy part out, to oversimplify), keeps enemies at distance, and is especially formidable with a shield or when defending.
probably the best melee weapon against wild animals, too. just dig the butt end into the ground and fucking wait for big ol' boar to charge.

Clubs. About the length of my forearm to hand for the haft that's not too thick on the grip. Or around that size. Head isn't that big of a deal as long as it doesn't look comical to me like a ton of flanges or just weird angles and spikes. Maybe even no head on it depending what it's made out of or how bad I wanna mess what I'm hitting up. Plain old thwack on something just seems under rated, regular brute force is good enough for me most the time. Finesse and stuff is just for people to justify their goofy impractical stuff.
