BOLT ACTION GENERAL

Since /BRG/ seems to be a bunch of ammo-wasting fags, we will enjoy our accuracy and pace

I have a .308 rem 783, I don't enjoy it as much as I do the Mosin. I bought it as a starter accuracy rifle but I'm feeling like I shouldn't have bought it.

I cant decide between a (modern) .223 and .308 for my first rifle. I wanna get the .223 because there is one that i like and is cheap (CZ 527) + the ammo cost is significantly less. But i'm afraid the recoil will be faggy. How is the recoil on both? I never shot a rifle and i like the recoil and fire show of a .357mag. revolver.

What your saying is very true, my 1903 Springfield has no recoil compensation and it kicks like a mule for an old rifle but hey it's a 30-06. I have shot ar15 but I know it has buffer tube so I don't know how to compare. I believe the .308 is more effective at long range compared to .223

Attached: Snapchat-1445985209.jpg (720x1483, 166K)

Nothing helps me vent anger like shooting my springfield, doesn't compare to the .223 peashooter AR15. Ammo cost isn't much because it's from 1916 all original so I don't crank more than 20 in a trip to the range

Yeah, everyone seems to shoot .223 AR and .308 bolt so they don't know. Seen a dude pull 1000 yard shots with CZ572, and the range i'm gonna have access to is 300 and 600 yards. I don't plan to hunt so energy on impact....eh, not so important i guess.

Just outfitted my Ruger American .308 with a Nikon BDC, gonna get some bulk ammo and a bipod for zeroing next week.

Prettyyyyy
I also have a bolt actions sears ranger 20 guage

.308 is going to be more practical in the long run so it's better to simply practice with that. Just buy a couple of boxes of cheap shit ammo in order to get sighted in and practice. The recoil is bigger than a .223 which is expected. But it's not going to wreck your shit. You might feel something after a couple boxes of ammo.

Fellas, I've got more money than sense and I've been thinking about getting a Blaser. What are some other gucci bolt actions in the $5,000 to $10,000 price range?

Look at a weatherby catalogue

Mosin nagant

Is the Enfield low quality a meme? A friend of mine bought a No4 and it seems to be very crude and low quality made.

I'm not afraid of too much with .308, but not enough with .223

>Garbage rod
"No"

Jesus guys, I'm not trying to bankrupt myself here...

best bolt gun coming through (at least as far as milsurp)

>posting other people's pictures

depends on the production time
i personally don't like lee enfields but some are better than others

that's my picture though, as is

>ywn have an sv98

I generally have a feel they're low quality and would you say they can shoot so fast becaue coc or because of ergonomics?

Anything Accuracy International.

time stamp

My dude, the CZ 527M in .223 is a great rifle. The recoil is very light, but it can put out some decent fireballs in low light. The thing is very accurate, the action is sharp, and the trigger is next level (~4-5 lbs standard, ~1 lb set trigger break). The iron sights are also a plus. Several people complain about the stocks, but almost all of those that encounter issues seem to be chambered in 7.62x39. I haven’t had any issues yet, and I have around 1000 rounds through mine.

not sure why it's hard to believe someone owns two mass-produced rifles and also takes nice pictures of them, but here ya go

probably a bit of both, it's not hard to shoot the M1917 fast either

Attached: IMG_20180628_152628.jpg (2448x3264, 2.33M)

Cool. What issues with the stock. Cracking?

Jesus OP, you didn't need to take it that hard.

What's the current average price for plinking-grade 7.92x57 ammo? I have Turkish T/M-38 Mauser that i haven't shot in quite awhile and the old spam-can of surplus ammo is quite low.

anywhere from 40-60 cents a round, as long as you dodge that shitty current-production romanian steel case that's far enough out of spec to chamber maybe a quarter of the rounds
turk surplus at gun shows and PPU is your best bet

Yes, there are sporadic reports of cracking around the back end of the receiver. CZ supposedly has some great customer service and if it encounters an issue they’ll take care of it and glass bed the stock but again, I have not heard many reports at all regarding those chambered in .223.

What keeps a bolt closed when there's no round in the chamber? If I took out the spring mechanisms in the bolt and inserted it back into the gun, would it flop out of the closed position every time you bumped the gun?

Yeah, and i want the laminated stock anyway, and i have a feeling that would be stronger as its artificially made.

>What keeps a bolt closed when there's no round in the chamber?
Why would having a round in the chamber keep the bolt closed?

Attached: Vz98_range_12-22-2016_D.jpg (960x1280, 814K)

I'm going to buy a Howa soon. I need at least one boltgun that isn't milsurp.

I was thinking that too
haven't bought anything in a few years but $249 from brownells is getting tempting.
I'd have to space it out for a while though, got $270 for the action, $250 for the stock then glass. Don't have much interest in dumping a bunch of money at once.

a round in the chamber doesn't keep the bolt closed, only the locking lugs do. taking the springs out would only make you unable to fire it since the only spring is the striker spring, the bolt would still lock just fine
>assuming you mean a mauser system

I've been seeing the 7.62x39 Howa barreled actions for awhile, but does it make sense to start building a bolt-gun in that cartridge when I already have a SKS?

I think the mini actions are neat but I don't see any stock options and they are much more expensive than the barreled actions in big boy calibers

I gots me one of those, has the lame sights tho

I bet it's super-accurate tho.

Muh babbies

I see them as being useful for training, but unless you like a boltgun a Howa Mini probably doesn't offer much advantage over an SKS.

If you want quality, get an AI AX. If you're a 30 y/o boomer, get a Barrett MRAD

>guns with iron sights sighted in for a minimum of 300 yards
>accurate

This, I have a 100 rounds of new production Romanian 8mm paperweights. None of it will chamber

IDK. Def a top tier pick. Swedish Mauser's might give the p-series a run for the money

I've got a bunch of bolt action shotties in my house. Relics passed on, never bothered to take pics or identify. If I get drunk enough and people are interested I will though. Means I have to go digging through some crawl space.

>sighting it in
>instead of just raising or lowering the rifle

sup, /bag/gots.

Merkel Helix for sale near me for $2500. Always thought these were cool guns.

Worth it?

Is the savage arms axis in 308 a piece of dog poo? I want to get my first bolt action any recommendations

>bought 40 rounds of it at the gun show i got my gewehr 98 at
>five chamber, three of them with extreme difficulty in closing the bolt and extracting the case
never again, romanian surplus is the only romanian 8mm worth anything, and its oftentimes hard to tell apart from the commercial shit

These are all bolt guns, well except for the SKS

Fuggg, forgot that was in there

Does anyone have the screen cap of instructions on how to practice long range shooting? It Includes dry firing and getting the barrel swapped after a while.

Mine

cant speak to the 308, but mine in 223 does 1.7-1.9" groups at 200yds. Make sure you get one with the accutrigger though, the base one I have was shit out of the box and needed work

I've been working on a .223 jungle carbine project. I had been slowly gathering parts and I currently have almost everything, even the special .223 bolt head. I even got the barrel profile from the Royal Armouries.

I also found out that I accidentally bought an unused original flash hider thinking it's a repro, which I do not want to waste on this build. I plan on buying the .670 ID flash hider meant for cut down no.4 enfields to use instead. That means that I will have to make the muzzle end of the barrel like pic related before slipping the flash hider over the wider part. Will this affect accuracy?

Attached: muzzle_223_jc.png (219x567, 11K)

Pic related is the inspiration.

How terrible are the scopes that come in the rifle/scope combo packages on budget (axis, compass, 783, mossberg) bolt guns? Are they serviceable or a liability?

Because you're compressing a very very small portion of the case and the bolt has more friction working against it to open it in that situation, I guessed.

I have CZ527 in 223, synthetic stock

indeed lightweight, accurate, nice trigger, controlled feed. Down sides are the magazines are expensive and with 90 degree turn the bolt handle raises very high. I have about 2 mm between the bolt knob and the scope...

Do you actually own all of these?

How's the quality on Swedish Mausers?

I was looking at 6.5 Swede guns to fulfill the "hit things from far away" niche in my gun collection and the Swedish Mauser seems neat. I know it's not very economical without reloading, but I also shoot 16 gauge so I guess I have a type.

I just got this CZ-557 Ranger rifle. It’s a pretty rare model. Fiber optic sights, removable box mag, two swivel points, picatinny. Seems pretty general purpose. .308

Attached: image.jpg (1536x3998, 3.35M)

mossbergs mvp range can take stanag mags in 556 and shoots sub moa.
not cheap for a ba tho

I handled a 557 with synthetic stock in a gun store. It felt much heavier than the older Mauser bolt 550

Is the trigger guard composite or aluminum/steel?

I picked up a 30-06 Remington 770 NIB for 180. Hard case which I'll probably keep and some 4-9x optic, 20rds which I fired sighting it in.
How much should I flip it for in my little fudd town?
I have no interest in keeping it.

It took you 20 rounds to sight it in, you worthless fag?

Naw, it took me about 8 iirc. I just fired off the rest for fun.

How are those iron sights attached. What would be left on the barrel if you wanted to remove them. Asking for a Aesthetics.

Do you hunt?
How far will you shoot it?
Whats your budget?

Noice I have a ruger American in 30-06, fucking great gun.

Surgeon, McMillan.

I always run ppus theyre worth the 70cpr.

Attached: kiv1.jpg (1270x645, 316K)

My only bolt is this plus 3 mosins it's been "spoterised" but I got it pretty cheap

Attached: 20180629_065650.jpg (3264x2448, 2.15M)

Blaser is ~4000 Euros in Germanistan. Is import really that expensive? Either way, can't speak for the R8 but the action of the R93 is buttersmooth and just fun to shoot. Be aware that you are overpaying on Blaser though, at least in the sense that a marginal improvement costs you an unproportional amount of money. Imo the straight pull makes it worth it but it's not someone everyone can "swallow" financially.

I ran a modified Marsoc drill with an M98b.

The ammo cost per run is almost 50 dollars.

>I was looking at 6.5 Swede guns to fulfill the "hit things from far away" niche in my gun collection and the Swedish Mauser seems neat.
They're accurate.... for a milsurp. Compared to anything modern they're very lacking. The cartridge is great though, and you can find modern rifles chambered in it.

What, is that a lot?

Attached: received_10155304603493339.jpg (3023x3131, 1.47M)

Carefully with them things. Had a ruger American that would randomly fail to eject. Sold that pos and got a ruger Hawkeye

Attached: 15302774743961627300438.jpg (2160x3840, 2.38M)

that is a nice looking rifle

Do any of the Hawkeyes have detachable magazines; how about aftermarket?

Anyone here have experience with mossberg MVP scout? Or savage scout?
Dont worry, I aint fallen for the scout meme.
But I want a short .308 suppressor host with irons that takes commonly available box mags. Which basically only leaves the MVP scout and maybe the savage scout.
Ill be putting a regular scope on it, no scout scopes.

What scope do you have on that AR bud?

6.5 Krag, smoothest bolt there is

It is a friends at that I shot with him, I live in Massachusetts so those fully semi auto scary baby killer assault weapons are prohibited in this great commonwealth. Met him in rhode island for a day at the range

Thanks, it shoots and cycles like a dream.
I think they make the m77 scout which is the same thing but with a box mag, forward set picatinny, and stainless.
As for aftermarket, I think there are stocks out there but not many. Ruger likes to keep a tight grip on accessories for their rifles

I don't have a solo photo of it , but in pic related you can see my Enfield No5Mk1 (F)10/47 I grew up on the No4mk1s and I'm still huntung one down BUT I'm very happy with the Jungle Carbine .

Attached: 20180626_210635.jpg (4032x1960, 2M)

Really want to get a decent bolt action rifle in 6.5 Creedmeme. What get? Note: decent =/= cheapest Ruger available.

T3X CTR

Tikka? I'll check them out, thanks. They a big fan of proprietary crap or are their scope mounting stuff pretty normal?

Not quite.

Attached: 20180411_103856.jpg (3840x1075, 2.8M)

Proprietary "Optilock", but some models including CTR have weaver rail on them

I'll probably get mine in 308 later this year

Ive never had it do that, weird. Reloads or factory ammo?

7.7 jap made cheaper when

Savage 12 lrp

I've searched for a decent priced 308 with iron sights. How expensive would it be to have a gunsmith install some decent peep sights on something like a Howa or Weatherby? I don't know how I feel about the Savage Hog Hunter.

I'm also planning on putting one of Boyd's Claro XX Walnut stocks on. Does anyone have any experience with that wood?
