there's an actual fundamental limit of speed of a projectile propelled in this manner, and that is the speed of sound of the propellant gasses
that number increases as the gasses get hotter and are compressed (higher pressures) but you just end up stripping the rifling out of the barrel

no, it just doesn't get pushed any faster
there's no sonic barrier or anything like that, the propellant gases just cannot, physically, keep up with the bullet above the speed of sound of the propellant gases
so it's impossible for a bullet to reach that speed, it'll just never happen
it's just like how the speed of your mom is limited by the top speed of her mobility scooter, but she can never reach it
