Royal Navy style.

What's their style?

WW2 US and japanese got it right

the bigger the ship, the more prestigious the name

>US
>destroyers = people
>cruisers = cities
>battleships = states
>carriers = ideals/important battles
carriers were in a weird place, since pro-carrier people wanted it named after ideals to represent virtues higher than even states
anti-carrier people wanted them named after insects, to emphasize their role to annoy and harass the enemy until the battleships arrived
important battles were compromise between the two

>japan
>destroyers = varied (months, weather, plants)
>cruisers = rivers
>battleships = provinces
>carriers = poetic or historical names
>yamato = japan itself

Boring

Are you retarded

No I just don't know how their ship names work

So yes

even if you're somehow dumb enough to have no idea how the royal navy names their ships you still have google you lazy shit

i still think the UK got it right with their submarines, tell me that HMS Vengeance isn't a good name for a SSBN
USS Maine isn't very scary

Provinces and provincial capitals like China!

>USS Spankalicious Spankerton
>USS Crumb Colossal
>USS Anus Declaration
>USS Rhizome Impounding
>USS Bologna Brapper

Random words don't quite work for ship names, I'm afraid.

I think having ship names related to actual locations in the US gives people more of a sense of connection to them.

The most recently named sub is called "HMS Warspite", which I think is great.

the USS and

Ian Banks' Culture series has a bunch of cool ship names.

>There will never be a droneship called 'meatfucker'.

The GOAT naming system.

So words, towns, counties and people?

I dunno about names, but maybe towns/representatives for small ships
and battles or famous ships (like Lexington and Enterprise) for big ones

On that note the registry system should be changed so
that the alphabetical order=tonnage in descending order
>AA for aviation/airbase (carriers)
>BB for battleships/bombardment
>CC for cruisers (missile barges)
>DD for destroyers (fleet defense)
>EE for escorts (all the weird one-off prototypes)
>FF for frigates (lightly armed, solo patrols)

The Royal Navy has the right idea. naming capital class ships after monarchs and admirals. cruisers after places and smaller ships according to a theme. for example the Tribal class DDs being named after different tribes of people from around the world. or they they just throw kick ass sound names into the mix just to flex.

for example:
HMS Lion
HMS Indefatigable
HMS Warspite
HMS Valiant
HMS Fearless
HMS Invincible (which turned out to be not so invincible)
HMS Indomitable
HMS Inflexible
HMS Conqueror
HMS Iron Duke
All of these ships were involved in the battle of Jutland in 1916 and my god that was the peak of great names for ships

Random words but only if they're truly random.
Here is a tool to generate your random words.

wordcounter.net/random-word-generator

Using this tool, the next ship should be named, "Circle Input".

>>carriers = ideals/important battles

2nd Amendment class of Aircraft Carriers
>USS Infringed
>USS SHALL NOT
>USS Regulated
>USS Milita

So much wasted potential..

We've had this discussion multiple times on Jow Forums and the consensus is that the navy should sell naming rights to corporations.
>USS T. Rowe Price
>USS Flowers.com
>USS Coca Cola
>USS Ubereats
Please make this happen, Trump.

The British naming convention of "badass" works because of the history of the Royal Navy, where many of those names have been used for hundreds of years and are not just tied to one ship. Making warships sound impressive/fearsome worked when the Royal Navy was practically unchallenged in the Age of Sail. A lot of those would just seem try-hard if someone came up with them today or even 100 years ago.

Also time for some good ribbing:
>HMS Lion, more like "HMS Lying... at the Bottom"
>HMS Indefatigable, more like "HMS Unidentifiable"

Huh. For some reason I thought the Lion was lost at Jutland. Forget that one.

The Royal Navy does that too.
The new Type 26 will be the "City Class" with names
HMS Glasgow,
HMS Cardiff,
HMS Belfast,
HMS Birmingham,
HMS Sheffield,
HMS Newcastle,
HMS Edinburgh,
HMS London

Manchester and Liverpool BTFO

I like the US naming convention that (sort of) came to be:
Carriers = Presidents
Amphibious assault ships = Battles
Battleships and now missile boats = States
Amphibious landing ships = Cities
Destroyers = People with significant ties to the Navy
Support ships = People significant to American history

Problem is that there were too many exceptions made due to historical significance or because a name was highly requested for something else.
Examples being that the name USS Enterprise has a lot of history behind it and so there will likely always be another carrier with that name. Carriers have also been named for people who were not President but it was decided they were worthy of the honor as in for the USS Nimitz.
USS New York was requested to be something that would be used in the War on Terror and so the name was given to an amphibious landing ship (The name New York could be the city, but it was said to be named for the whole state.)
Then there's if one agrees with retiring names or not. Should the Navy ever have 50 nuclear missile boats, 47 and on will need new names since USS New York is used on another ship and the names USS Arizona and USS Oklahoma won't be used. Therefor the practice of naming them after states cannot be sustained. On the other side of the retiring names debate, there were other ships named USS Maine and USS Indianapolis, despite the heavy losses when past ships with that name went down.

In short, it seems like if one wants consistency then a new naming convention would need to be drawn up, agreed on, and stuck to even if people wanted exceptions. Which is hard to say because I think some of the exceptions made were worth it. Perhaps having conventions for a specific ship class and not the ship type overall.

>sometimes have to look up a Royal Navy ship name because I'm not sure if it actually existed or if it's someone pulling my leg

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Negro_(1916)

Implessive

Can't wait for Blackcock to be introduced into Kancolle.

>One day we will see a USS Obama.

It will be a 120,000 ton refugee delivery ship

It's often themed around the Class name, so the Flower Class were called things like Candytuft or Pansy, while the Gay Class were named things like Gay Viking, Gay Bombadier etc...

The big difference is that in the US, classes are named for the first in class, while the UK class name describes the naming convention rather than neccesarily the first ship in that class, UNLESS a class is going with one of those "abstract cool name" naming conventions, then it'll be named for the first ship in the class, like the astute or dauntless classes.

But on the bright side it will rot so quickly that it will sink in the middle of the deepest ocean

HMS BLACKBURN

>HMS Negro[a] was an Admiralty M-class destroyer
Couldn't even have a name beginning with M. Looked at the class's page and saw there were so many they ended up just going into other letters. Would have been impressive to stick to it and just come up with at lest 85 M names.
Would they, or would they just start doing things like
>HMS M
>HMS MM
>HMS MMM
>HMS Man, fuck this

Maybe someday. I think a lot more Presidents, even politicians in general, would sooner have a carrier named after them then Barry.

I'm telling you, name them after serial killers.

they did that in black ops 2

>USS Arizona and USS Oklahoma won't be used
Because they were lost? That's no reason not to re-use a name, if anything being lost in action is a greater reason to re-use it.

I think technically the Arizona is still commissioned in some capacity. Oklahoma just hasn't been used again and as far as I know there have not been any pushes to use the name again.
There have been many other ships named specifically after ships with the same name that were lost in action.

US submarines = Fish

>USS Nickelback

Fish are a no-go.

USS Autism

HMS Insensible

WW2 subs werent anything like modern nuclear subs

their capabilities were limited, size was small, and their main role was merchant fleet raids and supporting fleet actions through harassment and silent observation
there were also more subs than destroyers, so they were, to a degree, expendable

fish was probably a good name for subs back in the day
modern subs are a whole different matter, since they contain nuclear weapons and more firepower than a battleship

So it behaved like a typical nig, attacked something that was there to help it, then got btfo in the process.

HMS SHITFUCKTITSASSFUCKGAYHOMOBALLS

>UNLESS a class is going with one of those "abstract cool name" naming conventions, then it'll be named for the first ship in the class, like the astute or dauntless classes.

even when the class is named after the lead ship like the astutes or the type 45 'daring' class they tend to have a theme within the class normally that they all begin with the same letter.

10/10 would take as my flag.

Wasp is a pretty badass name though

From wikipedia
>It is commonly—albeit incorrectly—believed that Arizona remains perpetually in commission, like the USS Constitution.[60] Arizona is under the control of the National Park Service, but the U.S. Navy still retains the title.[2] Arizona retains the right, in perpetuity, to fly the United States flag as if she were an active, commissioned naval vessel.[60]

I volunteer aboard the North Carolina and it's a similar situation. The ship is technically a War Memorial owned by the State of North Carolina, but the Navy can order it scrapped if they deem it isn't being taken care of, and it the state refused, they would lose the right to refer to the ship by its true namesake, which would make marketing tours of what would be that point a dilapidated hulk exceedingly difficult.
