Like said, you don't need a dehydrator. Just lay your strips on a cookie rack over a foil-lined baking sheet and dump in your oven at its lowest temp (usually 175-200*F) for 4-6 hours, or until desired tenderness is reached. The meat will get drier once it's out of the oven and cooled off

While this is mostly hearsay as I was quite obviously living at the time, most of the people in my family no longer have German surnames, or the translated it, like my Granddad changed our last name to Forester.
What he said was that there was fairly strong anti-German sentiment after WW2, it was not as bad as the anti-Japanese sentiment but apparently it was much easier to just anglicize it.
