Barnes cared about keeping the men in the unit alive. He was willing to do anything to keep them from falling victim to the VC's tricks.

Elias didn't give a fuck about anyone. He led taylor and the kid from california way ahead of the platoons lines during a firefight. He was told by barnes that the artillery was going to be hammering that area to cover their retreat. He still took two fucking rookies into the killzone and left them their alone. He was reckless and suicidal, he got the kid from california killed and he got himself killed.

The argument between barnes and elias was started when elias physically attacked barnes. Barnes was defending himself. Then immediately after elias's men were planning to frag barnes. He found out and that elias was going to kill him or that he was going to be caught up in a court martial over killing VC sympathizers.

Barnes was the actual leader of their platoon. The Lt was fucking useless and meak and defered leadership to barnes. Barnes killing elias was done to protect the platoon from having elias as it's only leadership. Barnes was protecting his men by protecting himself.

They're polar opposites of one another. Elias is meant to be the influence of good over Taylor, to show compassion to the enemy. Elias retains the ability to make the distinction between civilians and combatants, something Barnes begins to lose. Along with a variety of his other mental faculties towards the end. Barnes is meant to be an evil influence over Taylor, who shows nothing but contempt for their enemy. He dehumanizes them, belittles them and underestimates them. He even goes so far as to kill one of his own just because they had a little scuffle. Barnes is the epitome of a beta male pretending to be alpha. Elias wants to leave Vietnam as soon as possible without considering the ramifications. Barnes wishes they could push all the way to Hanoi and be done with it - but I think we all know now, in retrospect, that if it had happened that way there'd be no quick end to it.

Viewing the conflict after the fact, I would have to say Elias was mostly right. The price being paid by America to kill communists was too high. Particularly to kill communists who turned out to be pretty good guys. They had the sensibility to not only acknowledge that other communists in the area, the Cambodian Khmer Rouge, were committing atrocities but they also had the guts to intervene and eventually eliminate Pol Pot's regime. America should have always stayed in an advisory role in SEA.
