I was reading about Sobel the other day. Apparently he attempted suicide in 1970 with a small gun but ended up blinding himself. He died in 1987, and no services were held in his honor.

damn. I never knew that. I know he didn't attend the 506th reunions until near the end of his life. what book were you reading?

underrated

That was a deep rabbit hole for me. I think one was a MilitaryTimes interview with Dick Winters about his book. Let me see if I can find it.

Yeah I wasn't shocked when I heard how he really died. I don't claim disability or deal with the V.A. but I've heard and seen enough to know what it shitshow it can be.

Do they just not trained 2nd lieutenants or something in OCS? I thought all army officers had to go through BCT. Then they go to OCS, and then they get their command. I know for a fact land nav is taught in BCT. And even if you don't fucking know it, just turn your platoon sergeant and go hey please take me here, and they'll take you there

Cockney rhyming slang was actually originally invented by gangs on the docks of london to be able to speak about various crime and jobs without the police knowing.

I think it's in this book somewhere books.google.com/books?id=8rnji4qxMacC&printsec=frontcover&dq=We Who Are Alive and Remain: Untold Stories from The Band of Brothers. Berkeley Caliber&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwit94217oLhAhWQVt8KHa8GD6oQ6AEIMTAB#v=onepage&q=sobel&f=false

That is a good book. Everything about WW2 is just so fascinating for some reason.

Looks interesting, thanks user.

Attached: 1911pacific.jpg (1912x1076, 353K)

Its the single most important event in modern history, it shaped the world we live in today, so its not that surprising that it should be so fascinating.

True. Different times. Was only born 6 decades too late to be involved.

I'd say WW1 more than WW2 shaped the world we live in today. But WW2 was the final catalyst to usher in that post Imperial nations globe

Sobel catches a lot of shit, probably deservedly. He may have been a poor officer in the field, but he managed to train a crack unit. His forte was training and his superiors knew it.

I'd hate to be an officer of a famous unit only to get roasted on a fucking HBO mini-series.

Same, and some of the 506th have said as much. I'm sure he saved lives.

fucking fantastic job user. A+

Is land nav really hard?

orienteering is what is actually called, and no it's not hard. compass, map, protractor and you're gold.

boy scouts can do it. some army privates can't.

No it's not hard unless your female and in that case spatial ability is not in your skill set.

As the other guy said it's just like the sorry of orienteering which boy scouts can do. It's actually fun. I did it well at 16. However the military can take the fun out of everything and make simple shit incredible hard. But really the only difference between orienteering and land nav is the compass. In orienteering we used a nice lightweight, transparent, Silva compass. In the military we had a big ass unfolding thing with front end rear sights, tritium paint, a locking bezel ring. It was an awesome compass. Also could be used in North and South hemispheres which normal compasses cannot do.

I found that some otherwise smart people could not land nav. Translating the map to 3D reality just didn't work. Neither did trusting pace counts or figuring pace count stride changes due to terrain, etc.

I like spaghetti

tell me i'm a good man, user

It's probably one of the most well documented events, too. Though I think in impact I agree with that WW1 will remain king until something worse comes along. No WW1 no Bolshevik Revolution no Third Reich colonialism experiences a different evolution and decline. Hell it might never experience one. We'd have had wars, perhaps just as nasty wars, but they would have taken on a different form.

As for WW2 books I just finished the liberation trilogy. Three books, around 500-600 pages of content then notes/citations, from North Africa to the surrender with an exclusive focus on the Americans. Really solid stuff, particularly with the abundance of direct quotations from soldier's via their letters and so on, so it isn't just a history of maps and generals.

I need a good Eastern Front one, and I need it to be a trilogy or more. I'm spoiled since I have a pacific trilogy to work for next and a single book won't do jack shit for something as big as the Eastern Front. Hell, you could practically do a six-book series on the Eastern Front and still have room for more.

Blessed thread

Some people are just suited to specific roles, I would fault his commanders for not being able to iterate that to him in a way that would facilitate his skills to the needs of the Army.

Fuck that got me so hard when I was a kid

Attached: 1552196906988.png (291x299, 167K)

Wouldn’t that make him old since friends premiered way before band of brothers

The point wasn't that he couldn't cut the fence (he eventually did), the point is he was lost because he read the map wrong.

I imagime he'd be like Upham. Timid and weak, unable to kill a person until all his buddies were dead, with his first kill at point blank range.

That or he'd be the first fucking cunt to die getting out of the glider.

I watched this episode last night. It happened in Band of Brothers. First episode.

Ah yes, the GunKnifeCutter™

>wears a tie
>tucks it in their shirt

why not just wear a bow tie, one with a little motor that spins around

Oh God he even has rat teeth. He looks like Nazi propaganda.

No, but 2LTs have the same amount of military experience as E1 Privates, but with significantly more responsibility and higher expectations. So when they perform to their experience level, it can be disappointing.

Also, land nav success can depend on the quality of instruction as it doesn't come naturally to everybody. This can be exasperated by poor conditions such as bad weather, low/no visibility (night), sleep deprivation, hunger, and heavy loads.

I personally love land nav; running around in the wilderness with a rifle and kit is Jow Forums as fuck

because tucked-in Army ties are dashing as fuck, user..
