Depends what you're willing to spend and what you define as cool and unusual. I have an 1895 Gewehr 88, only cost $300, but unfortunately its out of service until I can find an ejector and bolt face. If old shit isn't your style than maybe a Mini-14 like another user said, I got mine for $500 and it's fun and not so common at the range.

Brownells has a retro line, and generally anything made before 1995. Retroblackrifle and Arfcom's retro board has great info and reference pics. I'm currently in the process of building a Model 602 clone to go with my Vietnam kit.

This. Mine is amazing. AR-15s are hands down the best starter gun. Parts everywhere, every conceivable caliber, and available at every price point. If you want something exotic, either get one in a wildcat cartridge, or buy a Wolf A1 upper, and get a lower and parts kit for cheap.

Don't do unusual for your first. Get an AR or AK and a plastic double stack 9mm then buy all the weird shit you want. That way you'll have something that takes common mags / parts and you're not left with no functioning guns when something breaks on your snowflake special.

15 years ago you could get an FNC for around $1500 and then a registered sear for another $1500. There were more sears than there were FNC's because of reasons. If I remember correctly, those sears can also be used in SCAR's so those days are long gone. Now a days an FNC with a registered lower goes for $17k, a semi auto FNC goes for about $4.5k, and the sears are hard to find but go for somewhere in between. Anyone that knows better, please feel free to correct me about the FNC sears dropping in to SCAR's because it was explained to me by an employee at a gun store and while that particular shop does have a lot of pre-86 machine guns for sale (Collector's Firearms in Houston, TX, if you're ever in town it's worth a visit. The prices aren't the best but the selection is impressive) he very well could be wrong and thus I'm misinformed. Anyways, the FNC today is probably one of the pricier options for a pre-89 ban rifle but it's not the most expensive around.

Also, as a starter rifle just get an AR. Parts are easy to find. Ammo is cheap(ish). Then get a GLAWK as a CCW for the same reasons. Get stuff that's reliable and easy to get fixed first. Buy "look how cool I am" stuff later.

In NYC you pay Federal, State, and a City income tax which averages at about 22% with everything added up. And that's assuming you make ~50-55k a year. And I'm actually not even sure if the site I looked at added in the city income tax. So i'm giving NYC the benefit of a doubt.

Texas is about half due to NOT having a State income tax or any city income taxes.

Also the average rent price in Texas is like $900. In NYC it's like $3000.

Obviously we're comparing a whole state to a city. But even in Dallas, Houston, or Austin, rent doesn't have to break 1500 for you to get a decent apartment or even a small house.
