Well, they’re containers for holding ammunition used by the military. But it’s also metal, making “can” more reasonable than “box” which can imply wood or plastic. It’s a “can” of ammo
But the name can also stem from the older, sealed “cans” of ammo which are made of metal and you had to cut open with a type of can opener, but this was more popular in the east rather than the west and they still use it today.
“Box” is a correct term, because it is a metal box, but we also have plastic and wooden ammo boxes, the metal ones are generally more rigid, meaning you can stack more with heavier weights, so they’re usually referred to as “cans” to be specific.
