So looking at the specs for things like the P38 or Corsair, this plane isn’t faster really nor can it carry more. Assuming I’m not missing a critical specification, what makes the Tucano attractive vs building known designs with better electronics? Cost?

Not to mention they were not designed with modern avionics in mind, and so with the need for more electrical power and space to put the equipment (and cool it) would need redesigns of their electrical systems, radiators, modern engines, new cowlings, modern fuel systems, autopilot, ejection seats, more radio equipment and antennas, countermeasures, etc. It would basically be a clean sheet with a somewhat similar shape, not a P38 or a Corsair.

Also they'd have to be made jet props because the military is not going to be routing avgas for one aircraft type.
