I've seen DDR Feuerwehr as refuting the point that it was due to Soviet-influenced politics that the NVA did not use the traditional Stahlhelm. Firefighters wore it (in both Germany's) but soldiers were not because it was thought that the Bundeswehr would continue to wear them and the NVA wanted to avoid friendly-fire/confusion on a battlefield.

Too bad for the SED that much like in the USSR & other Comm. states, the people used those new freedoms to tell the party to fuck off. Understandably so. God, I remember how in early 90's you could buy DDR and Soviet uniforms in top condition, tall sizes, super quality, excellent coats etc literally for close to nothing. They sold rain pattern wardrobe by the kilos.
Should have stockpiled them, Id be rich now.
Oryginal rain pattern wardrobe in non-manlet sizes is rare & very expenaive now.

I just got my East German webbing set from Ivan. The only expensive part was the Bayonet, the cost of everything else is comparable to what I could piece together from Varusteleka and Numrich. The NVA cheaped out on the tent poles, the wood is dollar store broomstick wood. However, the shelter half is 11/10, high quality and beats the crap out of Plash Palatka in design and execution. The 41” belt on my set measures to 34”, perhaps I got a FDJ belt instead of an NVA one, it fits my skelly frame with a T-shirt, but I’ll need to get another belt to wear with a tunic. Nonetheless, the kit is well designed, well executed, good for a day hike innawoods, or invading Western Europe, wish the factory could be reopened and crank out some more.

Just looked it up, an actual East German gun. A sniper rifle in 5.45, very interesting.
Early NVA has a look very different from itself a few decades later. Kind of surprised they didn't use more Third Reich weapons (I've seen pictures of early Volkspolizei with StG-44s) but I guess since the supply chain was now Soviet, they were using Soviet guns that were mostly surplus.

The government definitely did some negative things, but most of them were confined to within East Germany. So most people turn a blind eye to it because they do not know about it. East Germany only really stirs actual emotional feelings in those who lived in/next to it. Even with the Ostalgia, the collapse of the nation and unification is mostly seen as a net positive.
It's not like the Third Reich which not only had oppression within its borders but where it kept trying to expand its borders. Where much of the world was affected and people know about it, even if they weren't alive back then.

I traded a PTR 91 for this at a fudd LGS.
Honestly, if they made this gun today, it would probably cost more than $2500. The rifle is Olympic quality.
The gun is built with wicked tight tolerances and special design features.
Things like adjustable trigger positions, trigger pull, adjustable buttstock, etc. My trigger is set at .7lbs, I think.
Most of the problems you read about on the forums comes down to user error.
I've shot over 400 rounds through it without a single problem.
