9mm. Ammo price is awesome. You will shoot it more and therefore be more proficient with it. In a defensive situation shot placement matters far more than caliber. You will place your shots better if you have more practice shooting. You will have more practice shooting if you can afford to shoot more ammo.

9mm is only snappy in a subcompact and that is due to the low weight of the gun. .45 has more recoil. Put 9mm and .45 in identical weighted guns and .45 will kick harder.

The only reason to get a .40 is because you find a great deal on a used police gun. My friend got a great deal on a police trade in SA/DA Sig P228 in .40

The first gun I bought was a Beretta 96A1 because Academy was out of the 92FS and 92A1 and I wanted to get some practice in before my LTC course. That was four years ago. Finally picking up a 92FS at my FFL tomorrow. I got a 92S from Classic a few weeks ago, but it's just not the same.
