Define "best", user. What do you want? Wallhangers? Meme movie reproductions? Modern but functional for martial arts practice? Genuine antiques with legit historical value? If that last one, what nationality and what's your price point?

Im partial to Maciej Kopciuch

The kult of athena site has a whole shit load of makers, I hear they are a good seller. As far as who makes the best it's hard to say. Koa has tags that show if they are decorative or "combat" ready. I've heard very good things about windlass swords, but I don't claim to know a lot about them.

Rock Island Auction and Morphy's also have edged weapons auctions from time to time.

If you're after Jap stuff, Nihonto.com stocks swords from 4 to 7 figures.

Windlass is a sweatshop in India. They've been making meme swords and reproductions for decades. I've seen worse, but don't expect quality from them.

Thanks, I'll check morphys out

That depends on what you want out of the sword. If you want absolute historical authenticity then you're looking at antique sellers/auctions. If you want a cheap bit of sharp steel to chop shit up in the back yard with then antiques are most definitely not for you. Sparring in turn calls for something very different to both of these, etc.

That does look quite nice.

At least some years back Windlass was generally considered to be just about hanging on to the budget end of "not wallhangers". So not exactly good, but at least it was actual swords that they made.

Just to be clear, Rock Island Auction (the US's most premium militaria auction house) is not to be confused with Rock Island Armory.

Morphy's recently bought James D Julia, another well known high-end militaria auction house.

I have seen high-end knives and swords sold at both places.

IMA is not a bad source either. They often have some interesting pieces.

Modern but functional

Yeah, they do make swords "the old fashioned way", so I guess in some regard they are a step up from stamped laser-engraved mallninja retardation. But they are still very cheaply made with poor attention to detail. They're fine if you want a repro LOTR or whatever sword to hang on your wall. But I would steer clear if you were any sort of collector, or if you wanted to actually learn how to fight with a sword, were interested in sparring, etc.

I dunno. It seems that between a friend of mine buying a sword form there without issue and some user being terribly concerned that they might have done some advertising at some point, the former seems more important. Hardly a place to just go browsing if you don't know your stuff given all the wallhangers and such they have in stock, but then again you should always do your homework before buying a sword from anywhere really.

lots of other places listed in this thread you can buy actually valuable stuff for less.than the shit koa sell

I've heard good things about hanwei's Tinker line, at leats relative to the price. Never seen one in the wild though, and that deep in the budget end I'd make sure I could see it before I bought it or return it if the hilt turned out to be a bit creaky or so.
A touch above that in price I have some of Regenyei's stuff lying around, it works. Don't forget to ask for it sharp if that's what you want, and if the one sharp I've bought is representative (quite the if with that sample size, and it probably wasn't a sword type that'd be all that bloody sharp anyway) then don't expect a razor.

OK, we're getting somewhere.

Question 2: what style of sword are you after?

European Middle Ages (claymores, longswords)
If you know of people who make functional maces, pikes, axes, hammers, etc. I’d be interested in those too.

>European Middle Ages (476-1492)
Are you perhaps american?

The fact that he named two niche weapons that existed right about the end of the middle ages really gives it away.

Arms and Armor any good?

Tod's stuff/foundry makes some blunt implements, just the head as well if you want to smell some sawdust.

Supposedly yes.

I wouldnt trust Czerny's much. their stuff - especially medieval - is riddled with fakes.
Hermann-Historica are a bit better, but still some rotten stuff in there.

Galerie Fischer have stopped doing arms sales because of so many fakes out there now.

Thomas Del Mar is usually OK,
Peter Finer is more reliable.
Chiswick Auctions are doing a pretty reasonable trade thanks to a bald HEMA-ist in their company, for later 17-20th C stuff.

Avoid Jurgen Fricker like your life depends on it, and any item with a provenance that comes from Fricker. He man sells forgeries constantly.

Bonham's, Sotheby's, and Christies' are all options but tend for the serious money. If you're in the $12K+ price bracket, my honest opinion is you should be hiring an expert as a consignor to do proper assessment of all purchases, if you yourself aren't an expert.
