I honestly have no idea why in the fuck the USMC has their own air wing when they are completely reliant on the Navy for just about everything else, even medical aid.
The Marines were supposed to become completely integrated as more than just a Department of the Navy instead of being their own separate branch after WW2, but a bunch of higher ups threw a giant hissy fit at it and was thus reluctantly denied, like giving a kid that won’t shut up a cookie to quiet it down. It makes sense for the Navy to have a big air wing though, to further solidify sea power, but it makes no sense whatsoever for the Marines to have the same thing. Granted the military is full of nonsense.

I will tell you why the Marines have their own air force: because they dont ever want to see a situation where the Navy or Air Force could deny them air support or CAP or whatever because they are busy protecting their own branch first.
And I mean I could see this being a real problem: lets say Marines are under fire from enemy CAS while at the same time Navy ships are under attack from bombers with stand off missiles where would the Navy send their Super Bugs?

Just retire the whole type, the only reason it's still in service is because boomers have a hardon even Viagra can't match for this plane, just like with the A-10.

On top of that, the Marine Corps has been trying to sell itself as a fully-integrated force, with control over assets in all domains of a modern battlefield. Organic fixed-wing air support is necessary if you want to have all aspects of fighting a conflict under one centralized command.

Actually they have air wings because it gives the Navy an excuse to have almost twice as much flat tops once you count the LHAs. The entire F35 procurement debacle was the Navy 4d chessing the USMC into doubling the number of functional carriers in the fleet by making LHAs relevant to peer on peer blue water pitches battles.

LHAs are pretty irrelevant to the Navy because they're mainly directed towards assisting Marines.
