Military vehicles from that era have the slit to reduce light so they can’t be observed when using headlights, but still see the road a little bit

It's a light you use, when you're out in the field. Normal lights are too bright and can be seen from far away. Most military vehicles have those, in germany we call them Tarnlicht which means camo light or something along the lines
