Any variation of silicone putty plugs or wax plugs are best.
Foam plugs need to be jammed deep in your ear canal to work. If you shoot with any decent frequency, they WILL cause deep earwax buildup unless you have a disciplined ear drop regimine. This buildup can actually cause tinnitus, along with a host of other nasty things.
Sometimes I wonder how many people Jow Forums proudly participating eeeeeeee threads are actually just dumbasses that dont double up, hicks that cant read the instructions on foam plugs, or disgusting dirty scum that dont clean their ears with irrigation/suction (if you use any sort of plugs regularly you should be doing this periodically)

Have you tried using handgun ammo as earplugs? I heard they work pretty well, if not those orange or lime green rubber trees are pretty great.

regular cheap foam plugs are great if you learn how to use them properly. use them all day working around aircraft engines, never get any discomfort or ringing.
