so I have a WASR 10, and I want to pimp it out. Specifically, I want to cover it in colorful geometric designs, runes, crosses, etc. Sort of inspired by those garish and ridiculously bright colored Khyber Pass guns with stickers and tape all over them.
I already know what I want to do on the wooden furniture, that's easy. But can I paint the metal? How will the heat from firing the gun affect it? I won't do anything on the barrel obviously, but I do want to paint shit on the dustcover and the receiver. I've seen plenty of spraypainted guns, but I want more detail. What kinds of paints should I use? Has anyone here done this?

You can paint the metal just fine. It will wear based on how much you use the rifle and how clean it was when you applied it. I have painted a couple AKs before and they paint always tends to wear pretty quickly. I also do use them a lot and just spray rustolium rattle paint on.
Now if you really wanna get into kyber pass fun and give your rifle a true personality, You could break out that dremel and a bottle of scotch and have at it. After the second layer of paint completely wore off my $350 beater, I got shitfaced and carved it up. Since then, its been one of my favorite rifles to take out and just absolutely rag on.

Holy shit, yeah that's pretty much the exact vibe I'm going for.
What I had in mind was, invite some friends over, provide some booze and weed, and we go to town carving up/painting an AK, and the result is some psychedelic desertcore firestick.
I like the idea of having to repaint the metal body every once in a while though. That way, each design is temporary.

Its up to you. This was before I started carving it up and as you can see the first layer of paint was coming of pretty quickly. Eventually if you decide to carve it up, it pretty much will kill the resale but it will always be a good conversation peice and I get lots of compliments on mine.
If I have to use it to kill anyone, it will probably be the assholes kicking in my door that wear black and blue and body armor;)

I know it's not the look you're going for but when I bubba-camo painted my shotgun I just used the spray paint in the the pic and some regular old acrylic. As it fades and weathers it looks kinda neat. Pic related is about 4 months after the paint and there's noticable wear
