Lost

My grandmother lived in Dalmacija during ww2.She said that Italian soldiers were friendly with the locals. The Germans and communits would just steal whatever they wanted but the Italians were willing to trade fairly.

Nice, I know nothing about tanks, is this frontal armor particularly good?

>extremely racist
Can't find any racism in those postcards.

apart from being rivited these look like pretty decent pieces of equipment for the day. Did they ever see combat? How'd they do?

North italy did surprising well in comparison to the pre 44

Attached: 15056.jpg (323x897, 141K)

Italian troops with German commanders always did well. The Italians in North Africa under Rommel come to mind, some even fought to the death to cover his retreat

The Italian officer corps was a mess of incompetents, appointed for their political connections rather than merit, and all orders needed to be vetted through supreme command, which particularly hamstrung the Italian Navy

They could hold their own against a Sherman unlike the M13/M14 tanks.

Attached: croatsanditalians.jpg (1959x1526, 142K)

IIRC the semovente was quite good in Africa, ok frontal armour for the time.
The p26-40 would've been good in 1940 but by the time they saw combat they were inferior to the similiar T34's, Pz IV ausf. F2+'s and Shermans.

Italy is quite under-looked. Obviously not the best at the time but their style and some of their equipment ideas are interesting.

That vest is pretty good.

Even in WWI they had some cool shit. Here is a member of the "death company", engineers who would go into no-man's land with explosives to blow up barbed wire

Fucking captch ate the pic

the finest piece of equipment for a cuckservative-christian army such as the Italian army was.

What are you talking about? The Italians were the only ones on the winning side at both the begining and end of the war

That is very WW1-esque. Which I guess sums up Italy; like Japan, their modernizations would have been good if most players were thinking like WW1, but unfortunately for them their primary enemies had made very big advancements by the 1940s. Where Italy did not have the technology or industry to counter.

Big brain here.

That's because, as stated, it is a picture from WWI

Oops. Since the thread saw WW2 my mind just read it as "WWII".
Derp.

I'd love to see other weird axis photos, like Romanian stuff. They were so far behind (in tech, culture, etc.) but they contributed a shitload to the Germans. Especially man power on the eastern front.

Attached: 1555201533033.jpg (772x507, 71K)

The only thing Italy lacked in the technology department was radar/sonar for their navy, which they almost made up for with excellent rangfinders and fire control. They had some of the best artillery and aircraft of the war, and were pioneers of naval sabotage/comando operations. As you said though, their industry was severly lacking and they did not go into the war with sufficent oil reserves (they thought it would be over quick), and their tanks were sub-par.

Incopetent and overly political high command is what killed Italy.

Happens to the best of us

This guy knows.

Italians unironically are inventors and smart (even today they hold pretty good iq despite massive importation) and daring people but they aren't industrious, neither is their land suited for that anyway just like austria hungary in ww1 was doomed simply by the way the nation was

Didn't they, like the Japs, have an officer corps and enlisted men that hated eachother with no decent NCOs to bridge the gap?

Kind of. You have to remember, Mousolini came to power thanks to the Arditi, Elite WWI veterans. Prior to that the Arditi had launched a quasi-coup and took over part of Firuli for Italy lost after WWI, which was eventually put down by the Italian army. They also had to put down the communist faction of the Arditi.

This meant that Mousolini had very little trust of the old guard, since they were a potential threat, so he removed them all and replaced the officer corps with incomoetent, but loyal, political allies.

Italian commanders, like the Japanese, were hamstrung and allowed no independent action. Everything had to be cleared by supreme command, which cost valuable time and made them slow to react and indecicive. This particually hurt the Italian Navy. Had they been granted more lattitude and acted more aggressively, the could have taken the medditerranian from the British and the entire Africa campaign could have played out differently.

Failure to fully understand/develop radar was a death sentence. Being effectively unable to fight at night if the other side did have it.
Political fuckery was also a big problem but I would say that was inherent in the regimes of the Axis nations. Where there were inter-service rivalries, nepotism, and demands of the party/leader(s) influencing military operational decisions.

Hitler starting the war on a whim like the autistic druggie he was is what killed Italy. Mussolini had plans to completely overhaul and build up the Italian military but once September 1939 happened all of that went down in the shitter.
