A dog to start barking and alerting him. A gun near or on him. His daughters and wife taught to use and train with guns. But in all honesty, he was fucked in the beginning, even if he had a gun in the house.
Now how would one not suffer his fate today?
Motion sensors and cameras that'll alert you by phone. Security film on all windows. Reinforced door or at least door frame/jamb. At minimum, a comfy single stack handgun on you, with proper guns in the house as well. Family all familiar and trained with gun use. A non-shit dog that will start barking like crazy when trespassers are nearby.

Well for starters, sleeping on an exposed couch outdoors is a position of weakness, doubly so in the early morning,
when your yard is unlikely to be observed by neighbors. This guy apparently did have a gun in the house (if I remember correctly it was a .22 revolver or something else stupid) and he chose to flee when the invaders turned their attention towards raping his family instead of trying to retrieve it and defend them. Then there's the police response, which set up a perimeter instead of forcefully moving in, likely because the wife didn't effectively communicate to the bank tellers that their lives were in danger.
Bottom line, attacks of this nature are extremely difficult to defend against unless you specifically plan for them. I don't, personally, but at a minimum if you wanted to feel safe against this type of thing, you'd need a reinforced bedroom. Beef up the doorframe, internal hinges, heavy steel door, barred windows, and unless you want to spend hundreds of thousands to reinforce the wall, you'll need to sleep in a 1" thick steel coffin built large enough to grip and charge your weapon.
