In California if you want to be involved in politics you have to deal with Democrats. It's almost completely unavoidable due to the demographics of the state. You can either toss money at a Republican candidate who isn't going to win or you can buy your way into a Democrat's good graces to try to influence your local politics. It's ideology vs. pragmatism.
