I think the whole "You can be a prior felon or not have a carry license and you can still have black powder guns" is misunderstood. It's one of the few areas of firearms law in the US that should be strengthened to at least make it clear.
You can buy a black powder gun without a background check, without a carry permit, and possibly even get away with carrying one (good luck explaining that to cops if they stop you), but once you load it then it is considered a firearm.

Obviously recidivism is a thing but for someone who committed a violent crime in the first place, they're not going to be released unless it's believed they can be. There should also be a channel through which people can appeal to have all their rights instated but I believe that is a state-by-state thing. Don't know for certain.

Honestly? I think a lot of it is childhood based. My wife is a teacher, and looking at some of the attitudes of these kids I can already tell which are going into the prison system.
They’re literally raised their entire childhoods without any responsibility or accountability, something that perhaps Europeans are better at. I remember being in Germany for about a year and I never once saw a child rewarded for throwing a tantrum. Here? Parents will throw every cent they have into buying their kids things to keep them complacent.
Add to that the fact that parents WILL NOT allow their kids to be punished for misbehaving here (seen all the time in the school system), and it breeds an attitude in these “people” that they are owed everything and accountable for nothing.
