Try watching parts 1 and 2 and if they don't hold your interest that much alone maybe try watching with friends so you can make some funny commentary (lots of material) to make it go easier, they're not as good as later parts, but both have great moments and they're pretty short. Characters from 1 and 2 return later in the series so it is best to watch from the start. Part 4 is very much worth watching too, I don't know why your friends don't like it if they think Part 3 is the only one worth watching.

Part 1 is meh, part 2 is excellent, part 3 is pretty good, part 4 is my favorite. Usually when I get someone new into jojo, I'd start with part 2, then part 1 is optional, then part 3 and 4. You can start anywhere and it will still make sense because each part takes place in a different generation.
If you're in it for the stands, start at part 3 or part 4. Parts 1 and 2 focus on something completely different called hamon, which involves further development of a single concept rather than multiple different powers like stands.
