I left the Marines confused and lost. I traveled from place to place, picking up random laborer jobs. In a hick ass town in the Kentucky coal strip, an Italian family gave me a chance and taught me to be a brick-layer. I was an armorer in the Corps. I should have listened to my cousin and at least picked a liveable trade, but now I had one. I really wasn't making shit, but the cost of living was low. I'm still batshit insane, and a lot of what I went through still fucks with me, but my life was finally good, is good. As my life turned around, and the positivity began to shine through, one of their daughters fell for me. My wedding present was a house, a rent house, and a future business. On the downside, I have to have these really elaborate, drawn out Italian family dinners every night with my in-laws. As a third generation American, whose family is Bavarian Catholic, it is liveable, but my own family wonders why I have no time for their gatherings. My advise is to go out and live your life. Take chances and meet people. I wasn't looking for the love of my life when I found mine. I was just looking to live and keep from crawling full-time into a bottle.

Do some serious research before you join up. If you have a real degree, you stand a good chance at getting a real job as a commissioned officer. You can negotiate student debt payments for years of service. If your degree is in underwater basket weaving and they are not currently desperate for anyone with a degree and pulse, they may pressure you to enlist. They'll tell you it is easier to later gain entry to officer training programs, which is mostly bullshit. If you do enlist, seriously research the jobs the military offers, the licenses and training provided, and the requirements for civilian equivalent employment. If it is your thing, their is an opportunity to go be billy bad ass in a lot of specialties.

that's literally the median salary here. and i'm already 28. many of my friends were making 70k at 22-23.

I will have no student debt because scholarships. I am a CS major, so I could make money outside of it. Honestly the reason I'm thinking of joining is because I think it will build my character and I am basically a 22 year old weak Manchild but I want to improve and become more disciplined. I have seen other robot-tier guys improve this way. Plus I get to help others in the process by serving the country.

Is $100k middle class in America? I just moved here and am Software Engineer earning $150k before all other things considered. I was feeling good because in my home country $15k is considered middle-high class. I have not really been around much yet to get a good idea of my standing.

where I live 100k would be borderline poor, middle-class is closer to 200k

I moved here five years ago. My impression is that $100k is upper middle class in most of the country, but just average in NYC or SF.
