Equipment is not expensive at all, I have about $5000 worth of instruments and audio equipment all up but all you really need is a guitar and a DI box then just torrent all the software you need. You'll have to get a reasonable amp and mic to record guitars if you don't want to do it DI but there is pretty good amp modelling and whatnot now so you don't even need that.
However I would recommend getting some good studio monitors when you get to the point of wanting to do decent mixes.

I use Reaper which is free, technically you're meant to pay for it but they let you keep using it indefinitely so that's nice of them. For synths I mostly use Massive and Serum which are two of the most popular softsynths, they can do most things you need once you learn how to use them right. Every synth sound I designed myself which is a whole new can of worms, but worth getting into for sure if you have the motivation.

The drums are mostly done with a plugin called Nerve which is good because it comes with heaps of samples to choose from, there's plenty of options for that though. I also used a few samples from Mastodon for fills and various other weird sounds like the whip/smashing bottle snare, for that I just download them off youtube or wherever they may be.

After you've finished making the music you gotta learn how to mix and master which is harder than it seems, I mostly use Ozone for that which is sort of an all-in-one mastering tool. There's heaps of Youtube tutorials out there explaining the process though.

I'd love to help any way I can because learning about this shit has basically been my life's work so it'd be great to pass some of the knowledge I've acquired on to help someone else.

I think Guitar Rig is the go-to for amp modelling so try that, I downloaded it but never really used it because I have the mic and use other effects to get weird sounds from my DI recordings. I've heard it's really good though.

I saw them right around when Vol 3 came out when I was 16, my first ever major live show, and it was absolutely fuckin mental. I've seen hundreds of bands since then and it was still far and away the craziest live gig I have ever been to.
It was peak Slipknot then, they still had all the fuckin hardcore freaks and antisocial retards because they hadn't quite decided they had 'sold out' yet, but Duality got them super well known to anyone who likes metal so everyone wanted to see them. It was a normie festival with a bunch of different genres and more than half the people there were wearing Slipknot shirts because that was the only show they played in my country. You literally couldn't breathe in the moshpit, if you managed to lift your arms up you just had to hold them in the air because there was no way you could get them back to your sides again it was just too packed, and when every fucker jumped you didn't even have to do anything to jump with them because the whole crowd was just moving up and down as one.
It cleared out a bit after a few songs because people couldn't handle getting crushed so bad, but even after some people had to bail it was more packed than any other pit I've been in since then.

And the sound was just crazy too. The feeling of total madness, hatred and chaos refined into sound.

Yeah there was something super spooky about those songs. They were really underappreciated as serious musical talents because of all the edgy and gimmicky shit, no other band in history has managed to capture the sound of darkness and insanity in so many different ways so well as they did.

They got kind of gay as the years went by, but they never released a bad album. I could never get into the recent ones the same as I did their old stuff when I was an edgy teen who wanted to kill myself, but something sounded like how I felt in the darkest days of my life and that is something priceless to a young depressed fuckin loser.
