Yeah I deployed twice to Afghanistan during the deadliest years of the war(2009-11). Not a day goes by that I don't wish i could leave this shitty modern existence behind and go back to one of my Patrol Bases with all of my boys. My deployments to Afghanistan were the happiest days of my 29 year old life.

Did you do any time on a ship? I spent about 5 months on the USS Kearsarge in 2010.

I saw the writing on the wall. I got out in 2012 and the wars were dying down and combat deployments were becoming more and more scarce. The USMC hasn't even taken a combat fatality since 2014, and the couple of years before that were nothing like the pre-2012 years. If any of the wars were still raging i would have stayed in for sure, but peacetime Marine Corps is not a good place to be, especially for an infantryman.

You have to understand that 99% of our existence as grunts is so full of misery that I can't even put it into words for people who have never done it. Pain, discomfort, frustration at all times. It really fucking sucks. However, the 1% (When you are actually out on combat patrols , getting into firefights, and feeling those amazing adrenaline rushes) makes it worth all the bullshit that you go through. I use the analogy of a heavyweight boxer or a performer in a broadway production. You train for months, even years in preparation for the day that you are finally able to put yourself to the test. When that day comes, you are extremely excited and motivated to go out and prove what you and your team are worth and put your training to the test. The same concept applies to the grunts. I just couldn't justify putting myself through all the bullshit without even the possibility of the payoff at the end.

I really fucking miss it. I miss it so much that I tried to join the French Foreign Legion(always some 90 lb skinnies with 60 year old AKs in Africa for them to kill) in 2016 to get that feeling back while my body was still capable. I made it to the final cut in the 4 week selection phase but was not selected unfortunately.

I just made a post on Jow Forums about this, I'll copy/paste it here

I witnessed a combat engineer attached to my squad get blown in half by a 45 lb IED about 30 meters in front of me. It blew me backwards off my feet. I will never forget that image from the split second after the device detonated before I felt the shockwave, seeing his legs fly away from his body in opposite directions, and the upper half of his body propelled up in the air like a champagne cork. I carried one of his legs back to our patrol base in my daypack.

Another instance a team leader stepped on a IED and lost both his legs above the knee. About 10 seconds later we were ambushed by 2 RPGs and accurate fire from at least 2 different automatic weapons while trying to deal with the casualty. Probably the most scared I ever was in my entire life. I legitimately believed I was going to die for about 30 seconds and came to peace with my mortality. Fortunately our SMAW team was on point and put a rocket directly into one of the firing points on a compound about 200 meters across a field and the enemy fire immediately stopped.

We found 2 IEDs offset about 10 meters from each other on the bank of a ridge. We were set in a perimeter around the IEDs and got a bit complacent after a few hours of waiting for EOD. just as we made visual contact with the EOD patrol sent out to rendezvous with us, a rocket was shot at us from a town about 800m away. I was looking that direction and saw the thing coming nearly the entire way and was frozen. It probably took like 1-1.5 seconds for it to reach us but it felt like 15-20 seconds in my mind as I watched it traveling towards me. That's another image that is permanently burned into my brain It went about 5-10 feet over my head and impacted the ridge about 20m behind me. A guy who was even further away from the impact than i was took a piece of shrapnel through his calf.

I've got dozens of similar stories, but those three are what stick with me the most.

I encountered them a few times. There was actually an ODA group based out of a compound only a few kilometers south of us on my second deployment and we came across them a few times on patrol. They were like fucking cowboys, riding ATVs and two man utility vehicles around with 240s mounted on them, beards long as fuck, wearing a bandana instead of a helmet, just completely not giving a fuck. I went into their encampment once and was fucking blown away. They had enough generators to power an internet room, a flat screen TV and xbox 360 hooked up, refrigerators filled with monsters and red bull. A whole bunch of neat shit, meanwhile we were 4 kilometers north of them living in the fucking stone age with no internet, showers, toilets, running water, and only 1 generator that provided just enough electricity to run our mission essential equipment and a single 6 slot power strip for us to charge our Ipods.
