And more importantly, differently from how you usually do. Most people see themselves more regularly in mirrors than in photos, so they get used to seeing how they look in a mirror.
But in a mirror, the reflected image is of course mirrored, so the image you see is back to front from how it actually is. When you look at a photo of yourself, you're seeing your non-mirrored self

because your camera has different options for taking a photo's colors (I forgot the name, it was something like light filter mode or something), which can change the color of your skin, the way your shadows look, among other things. This is something your eyes don't have, so you're not used to seeing yourself like that and you think you look bad.
That and the fact that the different shading can change the way the shape of your face's front looks, changes the way you look on camera
